In 2006 I had to undergo a complex abdominal surgery which saved my life, but which eventually left me with a large incisional hernia. Frankly, this hernia scared me. It had obviously gotten worse with time and I was afraid that I was getting close to a rupture that would require emergency surgery. I decided I should seek out someone who had lots of experience repairing hernias rather than just going to a general surgeon. During my research, I ran across information for the Houston Hernia Center and Dr Garza, and after some additional research I decided he was the surgeon I needed.
My first contact was through the Houston Hernia Center’s website, and I was greatly pleased to receive a surprisingly quick response by telephone. When I explained my situation to the staff, they momentarily put me on hold, and the next thing I knew Dr Garza was on the line. With no appointment yet scheduled, he took the time to discuss my case and my concerns, and to advise me of my potential options. This solidified my decision to rely on Dr Garza, and I immediately set up an appointment for an examination.
On every visit to his office (as well as every telephone call), I found Dr Garza and his staff to be courteous, knowledgeable and genuinely concerned for my welfare. Dr Garza explained my condition and my options in detail, and took whatever time was necessary to answer my questions and concerns. On the day of the surgery he spoke with me before and after the surgery, and throughout my hospital stay he monitored my progress with daily visits. And according to my family, he also took the time to fill them in on my progress and to answer any questions they had.
Initially, my body didn’t want to cooperate with my recovery and I had some complications. Throughout all of it, Dr Garza monitored my progress and managed my care until he was satisfied with my condition. I have no hesitation recommending Dr Garza and his staff to anyone requiring hernia diagnosis and/or repair.
I was diagnosed with a hernia; the hospital I was at took me into surgery where I was cut open and the hernia was stitched closed. I spent 10 weeks at home packing the wound with sterile water and gauze, unable to work for risk of infection. About 3 months later, the hernia started to tear again and I could feel my insides starting to bulge through the tear and I was starting to feel a lot of pain. But I couldn't afford to have surgery and be laid up another ten weeks.
One day I was headed home from work I saw a billboard advertising the Houston Hernia Center. I looked the number up and made an appointment for that Friday. I signed in and a short time later I shown to to a room where they took my vital signs. I was then taken to another room with more equipment. Dr Garza came in and after introducing himself, we began to discuss my problem and I realized how my previous surgery had been destined to fail since they had not put any type of mesh in me to stop future tearing. He then showed us the patch that he could put in that would cure all my hernia problems. He would insert the patch using laparoscopic surgery which basically consists of inserting a camera and a couple of tools into your stomach without cutting you open. This would cut recovery time down from 4 weeks to just 10 days. One of the nice things is Dr Garza explains everything in layman's terms with none of the medical jargon that the average person doesn't understand.
We arranged to have Dr Garza do the surgery Tuesday morning morning at the Surgical Center which without a doubt is one of the cleanest and nicest day surgery facilities in Houston. The staff there was so helpful and everyone from the anthologist who explained how she would put me under to the surgery nurses who introduced themselves was just great. Ten days later I went back to the Center where I was ushered right in. Dr Garza checked his work, answered a couple of questions I had and told me I was ready to resume my pre-hernia life.
My quality of life is so much better now without the bulging and the pain. If you have a hernia anywhere don't mess around with it. They don't get better by themselves. Get it fixed. And I highly recommend you go see Dr Garza and his staff. You will be so glad you did.
My dad had hernia surgery three times, so when I started to feel a little bump at the bottom of my abdomen, I knew what was happening. I just couldn't ignore it any longer.
Like so many people who ignore their hernias, Jeff tried to live with the painful bulge that got bigger and bigger as the day progressed. Finally, he had to admit that the hernia was interfering with his life.
A Hernia reduced my sleep hours and as the day progressed protruded more and more. It was quite uncomfortable and caused me anxiety as it seemed to worsen with time.
I researched the problem online and came upon Dr. Garza’s website. I called his office and made an appointment. Dr. Garza’s staff was courteous and efficient and much to my surprise the Doctor saw me precisely on time. During our consultation my condition was assessed and procedure and fees discussed. I wanted the procedure as soon as possible. Dr. Garza and his staff scheduled it for the next day at the surgical facility.
The staff at the surgical facility were so competent and kind I was astounded. The procedure was done on time, quickly and efficiently and with great kindness and dignity. The total time was less than 20 minutes. I had minimal pain during the first eight hours and none thereafter. There was virtually no bleeding, scabbing or scarring. I flew 1000 miles two days after the surgery and spent a few days sightseeing and visiting with my son. During the visit I had occasions to go into the Atlantic surf and dive into the waves.
Seven days after the procedure I want back to Dr. Garza’s office for a follow-up and he released me to full work capability. I have functioned normally since then with no effects from the operation except the relief from the discomfort, anxiety and risk of the hernia. Fourteen days after the surgery I ran three miles and used weights at the gym, including squats.
I am so grateful for Dr. Garza’s treatment and care. He told me prior to the operation he would take good car of me and he has. I would never hesitate for a moment to recommend his professional services.
I would like to say thank you so very much for the surgery you performed on my son, JT. I am pleased with what I have read about you and your credentials. Your office staff was super nice to me on the phone when I needed information for payment. The Surgical Center was very nice to us all and helpful in looking up a locksmith for phone numbers after I had locked my keys in the vehicle. I have told many people that I found information on the internet about you. Thank you again and may God bless the works of your hands and mind as you continue to perform surgery.
